AN APOLOGY
I’ve said two things within this bind:
the world is cruel, the world is kind.

If one is true, the other’s not.
I’ll let you choose which one is what,

which means I’ve only really said
one thing which might be reckoned ‘cred’,

but then truth to the world’s one half’s
something at which the other laughs

and, since a poet tries to chat
to both halves, it would now seem that,

for all my love and labouring,
I haven’t said a single thing

so if I’ve merely strained your eyes
and patience, I apologise.
