PORTSMOUTH
Lonely in Cairo, I watched a ship
making apprehensive docking
and I could see that it was big
long before its name could be read
(and I've got good eyesight as well).

And, blow me down, it had a British name,
a British flag and British voices shouting.
It reminded me of Portsmouth
and I was inexplicably sad
as if left out of everything.

I still cannot say why, but there it is.
By profession, I'm an actress, by the way.
I've won awards. I've made a name for myself.
My name is Meryl Streep. Sorry, I'm lying.
Actresses do, you know.
